It is radical, revolutionary, lasting!

It is radical, revolutionary, lasting!

(Arthur Pink, "The Sovereignty of God")

"If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17

In the new birth, God exerts a quickening influence or power upon His own elect. Regeneration is very, very much more than simply shedding a few tears because of some temporary remorse over sin. It is far more than changing our course of life, the leaving off of bad habits and the substituting of good ones. It is something different from the mere cherishing and practicing of noble ideals. It goes infinitely deeper than coming forward to take some popular evangelist by the hand, signing a pledge-card, or "joining the church." The new birth is no mere turning over a new leaf--but is the inception and reception of a new life! It is no mere reformation, but a radical transformation. In short, the new birth is a miracle--the result of the supernatural operation of God. It is radical, revolutionary, lasting!

In the new birth:

God lays hold of one who is spiritually dead--and quickens him into newness of life!

God takes up one who was shaped in iniquity and conceived in sin--and conforms him to the image of His Son!

God seizes a drudge of the Devil--and makes him a member of His holy family!

God picks up a destitute beggar--and makes him joint-heir with Christ!

God comes to one who is full of enmity against Him--and gives him a new heart that is full of love for Him!

God stoops to one who by nature is a rebel--and works in him both to will and to do of His good pleasure!

By His irresistible power, God transforms . . .
a sinner--into a saint;
an enemy--into His friend,
a drudge of the Devil--into His beloved child!

Providence

PROVIDENCE(By Spurgeon)The boundless stores of Providence areengaged for the support of the believer.Christ is our Joseph, who has granaries full of wheat;but He does not treat us as Joseph did the Egyptians, for He opens the door of His storehouse and bids uscall all the good therein our own.He has entailed upon His estate of Providence a perpetualcharge of a daily portion for us, and He has promised that oneday we shall clearly perceive that the estate itself has beenwell-farmed on our behalf and has always been ours. The axle of the wheels of the chariot of Providence is InfiniteLove, and Gracious Wisdom is the perpetual charioteer.

over the hedge

God has two hedges(Matthew Mead, "The Power of Gracein Weaning the Heart from the World")
God is never better to us—than when the creature is most bitter to us!Thus God dealt with Israel, "She said, 'I will go after my lovers, who give me my food and my water, my wool and my linen, my oil and my drink.' Therefore I will hedge up her path with thorns; I will wall her in—so that she cannot find her way. She will chase after her lovers but not catch them; she will look for them but not find them. Then she will say, 'I will go back to my husband as at first, for then I was better off than now.'" Hosea 2:6-8. God has two hedges which the Scripture takes notice of:1. The hedge of his protection, which you read of Job 1:10, "Haven't You placed a hedge around him, his household, and everything he owns?"2. The hedge of affliction, which you read of here: "I will hedge up her path with thorns."Now the Lord make use of both these hedges:The hedge of protection—is to keep His people from danger. The hedge of affliction—is to stop His people from wandering. The hedge of protection—is to keep them in God's way.The hedge of affliction—is to keep them out of sin's way.The hedge of protection—is to keep them from suffering. The hedge of affliction—is to keep then from sinning, and to put them upon returning to God.So it was with Israel here—when God had hedged up her way, that she could not find her paths, nor overtake her lovers—then she cries out, "I will go back to my husband as at first, for then I was better off than now!"It is a great mercy for God to wean a soul from the world; for it never suffers greater—than when it forsakes God to live upon the creature! "Those who cling to lying vanities—turn their backs on all God's mercies!" Jonah 2:8. It is forsaking the living fountain—to quench our thirst from a broken cistern! Jeremiah 2:13.When the Lord weans a soul from the world—He embitters the world to the soul; either by some affliction, or by some disappointment in the creature—which makes the soul look out for the more pure and lasting satisfactions, which are in Christ.

real true love

Oh, the height! Oh the depth!(Thomas Vincent, "Love to the Unseen Christ")"Because of His great love that He had for us!" Ephesians 2:4 "We love Him—because He first loved us." 1 John 4:19Christian! Christ loves you with the FREEST love. There are many motives and attractions for your love to Christ—but Christ's love to you is most free. There is nothing in yourselves to draw and engage His love—except your deformity and enmity to Him;except filthiness which He loathes, and wickedness which His soul hates; these are the only motives. There is no man in the world who loves you, but he finds or fancies something to be a motive to draw his love to you. Wit is a motive to some, wealth is a motive to others, beauty is a motive to some, strength is a motive to others, near relation is a motive to some, dear love is a motive to others, liberality is a motive to some, service is a motive to others, greatness is a motive to some, goodness is a motive to others, likeness, whether it is in good or evil, is a motive to the love of the most. But Christ's love to you is altogether free! That which is a motive to men, and induces their love to you—is no motive to incline the love of Christ. The sin which you brought into the world with you, and the many sins which, since you came into the world, have been committed by you, are enough to shut out all motives of love in Christ, unto whom all sin is so odious and abominable!Whatever motive induces Christ to love you, it was not drawn from yourselves—but it was drawn from His own affectionate heart! Will not this free love of Christ to you—incline you to love Him? Does He love you most freely, and will you not love Him most dearly? Did Christ love you without any motive to draw His love—and will you not love Christ, in whom there are so many motives to draw your love? Did Christ love you with all your sinfulness and vileness—and will you not love Him in whom there is such perfect beauty? Christ's free and sovereign love, is a matter of the greatest admiration—and should be a motive for the greatest affection unto Him.Christ loves you with the TRUEST love. The love of Christ is not in the least selfish, and for His own ends. He does not love you to receive good from you—but that He might do good unto you. He chiefly He evidences His love in affliction and adversity. He is a present help in the time of trouble, and then gives the most tender demonstrations of His love. He istouched with the feelings of your infirmities when you are tempted; and sympathizes with you in your sorrows when you are afflicted. He shows His love in visiting you under your troubles, in supporting you, in relieving you, and in delivering you. Oh! What love should you have unto the Lord Jesus Christ—who loves you with such a true and sincere love!Christ loves you with the STRONGEST love. His love is stronger than death. The strength of Christ's love to you, shows itself in what He has done for you! It was the strong love of Christ, which brought Him down from heaven for you, to assume your nature. What kind of love was this—that God should become man! That He who made the world—should be born of a poor virgin, and all for your sakes! It was the love of Christ, which made Him lay down His life for you. John 15:13-14, "Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends!" That such a person as Christ, so excellent, so innocent—should undergo death, and such a death as that of the cross—so disgraceful, so painful; that He should submit to such ignominy, and endure such agony—and with such resolution and willingness, with such submission and patience—and that for such as you, who were His enemies—here was love stronger than death! Oh, the height! Oh the depth of this love! There are such depths in this love of Christ, as the longest line of your most extended thoughts and imaginations, can never be able to reach and measure!"May you experience the love of Christ, though it is so great you will never fully understand it!" Ephesians 3:19

Daily supplies(Thomas Vincent, "Love to the Unseen Christ")

Such as are very wealthy, are greatly loved by the poor and indigent—if they find them also to have large hearts and open hands—ready to distribute unto their needs and necessities. Consider Christ's fullness and all-sufficiency. None have such fullness and plenty as the Lord Jesus Christ—and none are so willing to give unto the needs of such as are poor in spirit, and sensible of their need."It has pleased the Father, that in Him all fullness should dwell!" Colossians 1:19. There is not only fullness in Him—but all fullness! Not the fullness of the cistern—but the fullness of the fountain! Not the fullness only of sufficiency for Himself—but the fullness of redundancy for His people! Not some fullness for some good things—but all fullness for all good things! Not fullness for some time, and to continue but for awhile—but all fullness dwells in Him, and abides for all His people throughout all generations! Christians have need of daily supplies of Christ's grace. They have need of Christ . . . when they are dark—to enlighten them; when they are deadened—to quicken them; when they are straitened—to enlarge them; when they are weak—to strengthen them; when they are sad—to comfort them; when they are tempted—to support them; when they are fallen—to raise them; when they are in doubts—to resolve them; when they are under fears—to encourage them; when they stagger—to establish them; when they wander—to restore them! None but Christ can do all this—and more than this, for them! You are empty—Christ is full! You are poor—Christ is rich! You are indigent—Christ is all-sufficient! Christians, will not you love Christ—who is able to do for you beyond what you are able to ask or think; and is as willing as He is able to supply all your spiritual necessities? Will you not love Christ—who is an overflowing and everflowing fountain of goodness; who has inexhaustible treasures of graces and comforts in Him, which are set open before you, and unto you—and every day you may freely come and fetch such jewels out of His treasury as are of higher worth, and of greater use, than any earthly riches!

grace/gracia

Grace alters a man's walk(Thomas Watson, "A New Creature")"Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away, behold all things are become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17The new creature has a new life. Grace alters a man's walk. Before he walked proudly—now he walks humbly. Before he walked loosely—now he walks holily. Before a man sailed hell-ward and, all of a sudden, the Spirit of God comes upon him and blows him heavenward. He makes the Word his rule, and Christ's life his pattern."Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did." 1 John 2:6"So that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God." Colossians 1:10

They are all head—but no feet!(Thomas Watson, "The Good Practitioner")A sermon is never rightly heard—until it is practiced. "If you know these things, happy are you if you do them." John 13:17Christ does not put happiness upon knowing—but upon doing. It is not knowledge of the points of religion—but practice, which renders a man truly happy and blessed.Luke 6:46, "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things I say?" It is not the mere knowledge and acceptance of the most glorious Gospel truths—which will bring a man to heaven. If a man could fluently discourse on all Scriptural truths, if his head were a treasury of wisdom, an ocean of learning—yet this could not entitle him to happiness. His knowledge might make him admiredby men—but not blessed by God. If a man knew and believed all the doctrines of Scripture—this would not crown him with happiness.Knowledge is a fair garland to look upon—but it is like Rachael. Though she was beautiful—yet being barren she said, "Give me children or I die!" Just so, if knowledge does not bring forth the child of obedience—it will die and come to nothing. I would by no means disparage knowledge. Knowledge is the pilot to guide us in our obedience. Yet, knowledge must usher in obedience. Knowledge may put us into the way of happiness, but it is only practice which brings us there! Knowledge alone, cannot make a man eternally happy and blessed.Knowledge alone, does not make a man better; therefore, it cannot make him happy and blessed. Bare knowledge has no influence; it does not leave a spiritual tincture of holiness behind. Knowledge informs—not transforms. Knowledge, of itself, has no power upon the heart to make it more holy. Bare knowledge is like weak medicine, which does not work. It does not warm the affections nor purge the conscience; it does not fetch virtue from Christ to dry up the bloody issue of sin. A man may receive the light of the truth—yet not love the truth, "They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved." 2 Thessalonians 2:10. The Apostle calls it "a form of knowledge," Romans 2:20. Knowledge alone, is but a dead form, having nothing to animate it. He whohas knowledge alone—is a spiritual stillborn! He looks like a Christian—but has neither appetite nor motion. Knowledge alone, makes men monsters in religion! They are all head—but no feet! They do not walk in Christ, Colossians 2:6. A man may have Scriptural knowledge—and still be profane! He may have a clear head—and a foul heart! The understanding may be illumined—when the foot treads in unholy paths. If knowledge is divorced from practice, and does not make a man better—then it cannot make a man eternally happy and blessed. If bare knowledge will save, then all who have knowledge shall be saved. But that is not true—for then Judas would be saved, for he had knowledge enough. Then the devil would be saved! A man may have right knowledge, and be no better than a devil! Hell is full of learned heads! Knowledge alone, makes a man's case worse! Knowledge takes away all excuse. Knowledge adds to a man's torment. "Woe to you! I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you!" It will be better with heathen—than with professing Christians living in a contradiction to their knowledge. Luke 12:47, "The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it!" Knowledge without practice, serves only as a torch to light men to hell—the brighter the light, the hotter the fire!

something to remember for valetine's day

i came across this qoute from J.C. Ryle and reflecting on it-it is a good thing to remember on this holiday. Until i met my wife i was used by ladies on this day-they got what they wanted and then when it was over they just spit my out. So I encourage both guys and girls not to play with someone's heart not only today but everday because you would not want the samething done to you:

This is a golden rule indeed!(J. C. Ryle, "The Gospel of Matthew" 1856)"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." Matt. 7:12Jesus here lays down a general principle for our guidance in all doubtful questions between man and man. We are not to deal with others as others deal with us. This is mere selfishness and heathenism. We are to deal with others as we would like others to deal with us. This is real Christianity. This is a golden rule indeed! It does not merely forbid all petty malice and revenge, all cheating and deceit. It does much more. It settles a hundred difficult points, which in a world like this are continually arising between man and man. It prevents the necessity of laying down endless little rules for our conduct in specific cases. It sweeps the whole debatable ground with one mighty principle. It shows us a balance and measure, by which every one may see at once what is his duty. Is there a thing we would not like our neighbor to do to us? Then let us always remember, that this is the thing we ought not to do to him. Is there a thing we would like him to do to us? Then this is the very thing we ought to do to him. How many intricate questions would be decided at once, if this rule were honestly used!"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you." Matt. 7:12
Matt. 7:12

God's living rainbow:christains of all races, tongues and nations

The Lord has two heavens(Thomas Watson, "Body of Divinity")"Just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written--Be holy, because I am holy." 1 Peter 1:15-16God is not drawn to any person's outward beauty, great abilities, noble blood or worldly grandeur. But He is drawn to a heart embellished with holiness. Christ never admired anything but the beauty of holiness. He slighted the glorious buildings of the temple--but admired the woman's faith, and said, "O woman, great is your faith!" As a king delights to see his image upon a piece of coin; so where God sees His likeness--He gives His love! The Lord has two heavens to dwell in--and the holy heart is one of them!

On Christ's asscension

Here are some quotes to mediate on:

1. “How does Christ’s ascension into heaven benefit
us?
First, He is our Advocate in heaven before
His Father. [Rom 8:34; I John 2:1]
Second, we have our flesh in heaven as a sure
pledge that He, our Head, will also take us, His
members, up to Himself. [ John 14:2; 17:24;
Ephes 2:4-6]
Third, He sends us His Spirit as a counterpledge,[
John 14:16; Acts 2:33; 2 Cor 1:21, 22;
5:5] by whose power we seek the things that are
above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand
of God, and not the things that are on earth.
[Col 3:1-4]”
(Heidelberg Cathechism, Question 49

2. “The ascension further means that in returning
to God, the Risen One takes along the fullness
of human life experienced by Jesus, including
the worst of earthly agony. Christians have
no good reason for doubting that God understands
in the most personal possible way our
human struggle, sorrows, and defeats. The God
who came into our midst as a baby and dwelt
among us experienced all things, even to the
most severe forms of oppression and suffering;
that experience was not a transitory episode to
be forgotten by God after thirty years. No, that
experience is carried into heaven, that we may
know the Most High identifies always even with
the least and the lowest.
That is the import of what is otherwise to us
the strange language of the Letter to the Hebrews:
For it is clear that [Jesus] did not come to
help angels, but the descendants of Abraham.
Therefore he had to become like his brothers
and sisters in every respect, so that he might
be a merciful and faithful high priest in the
service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement
for the sins of the people. Because he
himself was tested by what he suffered, he is
able to help those who are being tested.
(2:16-18)
Since, then, we have a great high priest
who has passed through the heavens, Jesus,
the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession
[of faith]. For we do not have a high
priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but we have one who in every
respect has been tested as we are, yet without
sin. Let us therefore approach the throne
of grace with boldness, so that we may receive
mercy and find grace to help in time of
need. (4:14-16)
When celebrated in its fullness, the ascension is a
source of great strength to all who suffer.”
(Laurence Hill Stookey, Calendar: Christ’s Time
for the Church, 70-71)

3. “In Jesus Christ we are given more than the creative
mould for our human responses, we are
provided with the very essence and core of
man’s worship of God. In His life, death, resurrection
and ascension He offered Himself
through the eternal Spirit in our name and on
our behalf, presenting us in Himself to the Father,
once and for all, so that He remains for
ever our sole offering in deed and word with
which we appear before God. We do not draw near to God in worship either with our own selfexpression
or empty handed, but with hands of
faith filled with the self-oblation of Christ, for He
constitutes in His vicarious humanity the eloquent
reality of our worship.”
(Thomas F. Torrance, “The Word of God and
the Response of Man,” God and Rationality, 157

4. “We do not appear with our gifts in the presence
of God without an intercessor. Christ is our Mediator,
by whose intervention we offer ourselves
and our all to the Father; he is our High Priest,
who, having entered into the upper sanctuary,
opens up an access for us; he is the altar on
which we lay our gifts.”
(Bryan D. Spinks, “The Ascension and the Vicarious
Humanity of Christ,” Time and Country

God's love letter

God's love-letter(Thomas Brooks, "The Crown and Glory of Christianity, or, HOLINESS, the Only Way to Happiness", 1662)The Scripture is God's love-letter to men. Here the lamb may wade—and here the elephant may swim! The blessed Scriptures are of infinite worth and value! Here you may find . . . a remedy for every disease, balm for every wound, a plaster for every sore, milk for babes, meat for strong men, comfort for the afflicted, support for the tempted, solace for the distressed, ease for the wearied, a staff to support the feeble, a sword to defend the weak. The holy Scriptures are . . . the map of God's mercy—and man's misery, the touchstone of truth, the shop of remedies against all maladies, the hammer of vices, the treasury of virtues, the exposer of all sensual and worldly vanities, the balance of equity, the most perfect rule of all justice and honesty.Ah, friends, no book befits your hands like the Bible! The Bible is the best preacher. This book, this preacher will preach to you . . . in your shops, in your chambers, in your closets, yes, in your own bosoms! This book will preach to you at home and abroad; it will preach to you in all companies; and it will preach to you in all conditions. By this book you shall be saved—or by this book you shall be damned! By this book you must live.By this book you must die. By this book you shall be judged in the great day! Oh, therefore . . . love this book above all other books, prize this book above all other books, read this book before all other books, study this book more than all other books! For he who reads much—and understands nothing,is like him who hunts much—and catches nothing."Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long!" Psalm 119:97

solo christo and martin luther

Therefore, when we preach faith, that we should worship nothing but God alone, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, as we say in the Creed: “I believe in God the Father almighty and in Jesus Christ,” then we are remaining in the temple at Jerusalem. Again, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him” “You will find him in a manger”. He alone does it. But reason says the opposite: What, us? Are we to worship only Christ? Indeed, shouldn’t we also honor the holy mother of Christ? She is the woman who bruised the head of the serpent. Hear us, Mary, for thy Son so honors thee that he can refuse thee nothing. Here Bernard went too far in his “Homilies on the Gospel ‘ Missus est Angelus .’ ” God has commanded that we should honor the parents; therefore I will call upon Mary. She will intercede for me with the Son, and the Son with the Father, who will listen to the Son. So you have the picture of God as angry and Christ as judge; Mary shows to Christ her breast and Christ shows his wounds to the wrathful Father. That’s the kind of thing this comely bride, the wisdom of reason cooks up: Mary is the mother of Christ, surely Christ will listen to her; Christ is a stern judge, therefore I will call upon St. George and St. Christopher. No, we have been by God’s command baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, just as the Jews were circumcised. Therefore, just as the Jews set up all over the land their own self-chosen shrines, as if Jerusalem were too narrow, so we also have done. As a young man must resist lust and an old man avarice, so reason is by nature a harmful whore. But she shall not harm me, if only I resist her. Ah, but she is so comely and glittering. That’s why there must be preachers who will point people to the catechism: I believe in Jesus Christ, not in St. George or St. Christopher, for only of Christ is it said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”; not of Mary or the angels. The Father did not speak of Gabriel or any others when he cried from heaven, “Listen to him.” [LW 51:375-376]
